The National Energy Administration recently approved the expansion of the New Yuan Coal Mine in the Yangquan Mining Area, Shanxi Province. The project aims to support the development of a major coal base in eastern Shanxi, ensure a stable coal supply, and optimize the region’s coal industry structure. Once completed, the New Yuan Coal Mine will add a production capacity of 5 million tons per year.
The total investment for the expansion is 1.26 billion RMB, and the mine will be located in Shouyang County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province. The mine's capacity will increase from 2.7 million tons annually to 5 million tons. The expansion will include new shaft construction, the purchase of additional mining and washing equipment, and a corresponding upgrade to the coal washing plant’s capacity. Underground coal transportation will be handled by belt conveyors, while auxiliary transport will use rubber-tired vehicles. The coal washing process will be enhanced with new technologies, including intelligent dry separation and flotation.
Shanxi is one of China's key energy hubs, with abundant and diverse coal resources. By the end of 2024, the total raw coal production from large-scale enterprises in Shanxi is expected to reach 126.87 million tons, accounting for about 26.7% of the country's total production. The province is also ramping up coal mine capacity, further improving energy supply security. Seven new coal mines have entered joint trial operations, while ten have passed final inspections, and five production mines have undergone capacity increases. Additionally, Shanxi is advancing clean and efficient coal utilization, with 83% of the province’s coal production now coming from advanced capacity mines, and the number of intelligent coal mines has risen to 268.
