According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s energy production continued to grow steadily in 2024, supported by the effective implementation of policies aimed at stabilizing energy supply and prices. The country’s energy production, supply, storage, and distribution systems have seen continuous improvements, resulting in growth across major energy sectors, including coal, oil, natural gas, and electricity. This progress has helped strengthen the energy supply foundation and significantly enhance overall energy security.

Coal Production Reaches Record High: In 2024, China’s raw coal production hit a historic high. The release of advanced coal production capacity has helped ensure reliable energy supply. The total output of raw coal from large-scale industrial enterprises reached 4.76 billion tons, a 1.3% increase from the previous year.

Oil and Gas Reserves and Production Continue to Expand: Efforts to boost oil and gas reserves and production have made solid progress. Stable output and rising self-sufficiency levels have been a key focus. In 2024, crude oil production from large-scale industrial enterprises reached 210 million tons, marking a 1.8% increase from the previous year, continuing the trend of maintaining production above 200 million tons for the third consecutive year. Natural gas production also increased to 246.4 billion cubic meters, up 6.2% from the previous year, marking the eighth consecutive year of production growth exceeding 10 billion cubic meters.

Stable and Secure Power Supply: The coordination and optimization of various power sources, including coal, wind, solar, and nuclear, have helped ensure a stable electricity supply. The transformation of coal-fired power units to improve flexibility has continued, with coal power playing a critical role in securing energy supply. Significant progress has also been made in developing wind and solar power, while hydropower development has been balanced with ecological protection. Nuclear power has been developed safely, and the capacity for cross-provincial and cross-regional power transmission has been expanded, meeting both industrial and residential electricity demands. In 2024, total industrial electricity generation reached 9.4 trillion kWh, a 4.6% increase from the previous year. Of this, thermal power generation accounted for 6.3 trillion kWh, growing by 1.5%, while clean energy sources—hydropower, nuclear, wind, and solar—generated 3.1 trillion kWh, up 11.6%.
