On February 7, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) issued a strong statement opposing the U.S. government’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The full text is as follows:
On February 1 (local time), the U.S. government announced a 10% tariff increase on Chinese products, citing concerns over fentanyl and other issues. In response, the CCCME firmly opposes this unilateral move, stating that it seriously violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, fails to address U.S. domestic challenges, and disrupts normal trade and economic cooperation between China and the United States.
For decades, China and the U.S. have maintained close trade relations, delivering mutual benefits to businesses and consumers in both countries. However, the newly imposed tariffs will increase business costs, destabilize supply chains, and ultimately harm not only Chinese exporters but also U.S. importers and consumers.
Trade is not a zero-sum game—cooperation and mutual benefit are the only paths to sustainable growth. The CCCME urges the U.S. government to abandon trade protectionism and instead resolve disputes through equal and constructive dialogue, working together to safeguard an open, fair, and stable international trade order.
